Fins are weird, but every once and awhile they touch upon genius.
Since 2000 every late August in the small town of Savonlinna, Finland, men and women gather to watch and participate in a stunning display of athleticism and frustration: The Mobile Phone Throwing World Championship.
The rules are simple enough, phones weigh anywhere from 220 grams to over 400 grams and each contestant can choose the mobile phone of their liking (or disliking).
Last year a native Fin Ere Karjalainen set the world record with a staggering 101,46 m throw that successfully smashed his phone to bits. The female champion also from Finland, Jonna Mattero tossed her mobile a relatively impressive 42,47 m.
Some argue the Fins should recycle their old mobile phones to less fortunate individuals still using landlines, such a suggestion, however, is comprehensively mocked by all serious participants (yes there are a few).
2013′s Mobile Phone World Championship begins tomorrow August 24th, for those of you unable to attend in person, ESPN will provide live coverage of the event.
